Most replacement windows look similar from the curb. What separates one that performs from one that disappoints is almost entirely in the glass package and the frame, and in North Alabama the glass package matters more than most homeowners realize.
Our summers do the damage. From May through September the sun beats on south and west facing walls for hours at a time, and the heat that comes through your glass is heat your air conditioner has to remove. A modern insulated glass unit fights that with a low emissivity (low-E) coating, a microscopically thin layer that reflects solar heat back outside while still letting visible light through. The space between the panes is filled with an inert gas, usually argon, which conducts heat far more slowly than plain air.
Two numbers describe the result. U-factor measures how well the window holds heat in, which matters on our cold mornings. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much solar heat the window lets through, and in a cooling-dominated climate like the Tennessee Valley, SHGC is the one to watch. A lower SHGC means less of that August afternoon ends up in your living room.
The frame matters too. Vinyl and composite frames do not conduct heat the way aluminum does, and they will not swell, rot, or need repainting through our humidity swings the way old wood frames did.
A window is only as good as the opening it sits in, so the work starts before anything is ordered.
We come out and measure the actual rough opening rather than the old window, because in older Huntsville and Decatur homes that have settled over decades, those are frequently not the same thing. We check whether the opening is square and plumb, and we look at the condition of the framing and sill for water damage that needs to be dealt with before a new window goes in, not discovered halfway through the install.
On install day the old unit comes out cleanly so your trim, siding, and drywall stay intact. The opening is prepared and flashed so water is directed back outside. The new window is shimmed until it is truly square, because a window that is out of true will not seal evenly against its weatherstripping no matter how good that weatherstripping is. The gap around the frame is insulated and sealed, and then everything gets tested and cleaned up.
That process is why we do an in-home assessment before quoting. There is no honest way to price a window without seeing the opening it goes into.
A single window is usually a same-day job. A whole-home replacement typically runs one to three days depending on how many openings there are and whether any framing repair is needed. We give you a realistic timeline at the estimate rather than after we have started.
No. Plenty of homeowners phase the work, and it is a perfectly sensible way to do it. If you are going to start somewhere, start with the windows that are actually failing or with the sun-facing side of the house, because that is where you will feel the difference first.
They reduce one real source of loss, and in the Alabama cooling season the comfort difference tends to be immediate and obvious, especially in rooms that were never comfortable in the afternoon. We would rather not quote you a percentage, because the honest answer depends on how bad your current windows are, how your home is oriented, and how the rest of your envelope performs. What we can tell you is that the rooms stop being unbearable.
Yes. Our replacement windows carry a lifetime product warranty. We will walk you through exactly what it covers during your in-home estimate.
Constantly. Many of the homes we work on in established Huntsville neighborhoods and older parts of Decatur have settled, which means openings are rarely perfectly square. That is exactly why we measure the opening rather than the old window, and it is why a careful installation matters more in an older home, not less.
It depends on what has failed. A broken balance or a bad seal on one window can sometimes be repaired. Rot in the frame, fogging between the panes, or a sash that no longer sits true generally cannot be fixed in a way that lasts. We wrote a full breakdown in window replacement vs. single window repair, and we will tell you honestly at the estimate if we think a repair is the smarter call.
